Once I start to write, the story will unfold in new and unexpected ways, and I really love that part of the process too. I cannot start writing until I have these things firmly in my head, as well as the first line. I play with ideas for the structure, and establish my keystones - the title, the opening and closing scenes, and a few vividly imagined scenes along the way. I write an outline, and then draw up a rough plan which normally takes up a page or two in my notebook. I spend quite a long time doing my research, immersing myself in the period, daydreaming, pondering the story, scribbling down ideas, sticking photos and maps into my notebook, exploring possibilities, imagining my characters and the setting and so on. I would never want to do anything else.ĭo you plan your novels in advance or does the story unfold as you go?īoth.

Let me ask you, with over 25 published books to your name, what do you love most about being a writer?Įverything! I love every stage of writing a new novel from buying myself a beautiful new notebook to building the story, step by slow step, to the actual rush of joy that comes when the writing is going well. Kate, thanks for joining us on Carpe Librum. Their only chance to be together rested on the success of the story collection. It gives me great pleasure to introduce one of Australia's most successful and prolific authors, Kate Forsyth author of Bitter Greens and her latest release The Wild Girl. Wilhelm and Dortchen fell in love, but due to her overbearing and abusive father and both families extreme poverty, they were unable to marry. The greatest of these sources was Dortchen Wild, she told Wilhelm the tales of The Frog King, Hansel and Gretel and Rumpelstiltskin among others. As an act of defiance to the occupation, the Grimm brothers began collecting old stories from neighbours and friends with an aim to publish a book and preserve some of the German folklore. Set during the French Revolution, a time of war and poverty under Napoleon’s occupation, The Wild Girl tells the story of two poor neighbouring families, the Grimms and the Wilds. This is their dramatic and passionate story - one of the greatest untold love stories in history. Growing up next door to the Grimm brothers in Hesse-Cassel, a small German kingdom, Dortchen Wild was the source of some of the most powerful and compelling stories in the famous fairy tale collection, and the true love of Wilhelm Grimm. Kate will be launching her new book Wild Girl published by Vintage Australia available for attendees at 20% off RRP Join us for a glass of champagne with Kate Forsyth on Wednesday, 13th March at 6:00 p.m.
